Yukiko Yamagata is an arts and philanthropy leader, strategic advisor, and curator with over two decades of experience building innovative programs that strengthen the capacity of artists, cultural organizations, and their leaders. She is uniquely skilled at developing cross-sector initiatives and partnerships that transcend disciplinary silos, cultivate community, and foster a cross-cultural exchange of art and ideas. As Founder and Principal of Lucida Projects, she collaborates with executive directors, funders, and artists on strategic planning, fundraising and donor cultivation strategies, program assessment and design, and project development, curation, and research. As Curatorial and Deputy Director for Culture and Art at the Open Society Foundations (OSF), she launched a $15.8 million global arts program, overseeing program strategy, operations, and grantmaking in the field of socially-engaged art. Through fellowships, grants, and strategic partnerships, she funded artists, cultural activists, organizations, and their leaders to create more vibrant, diverse, and connected arts ecosystems. In her leadership of Open Society's Documentary Photography Project and as curator for its Moving Walls exhibition series, she transformed and expanded the program’s scope and geographic reach to create a more dynamic, global, and interdisciplinary program. Over the course of her 16 years working at OSF, she supported and partnered with hundreds of artists and cultural organizations in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and North Africa. In her leadership, she combines vision and strategic thinking with operational acumen and centers DEI values to ensure programmatic excellence and relevance. She is passionate about people management, building diverse teams, and cultivating a transparent and mutually-supportive organizational culture where people are given the tools to excel in their individual roles and leadership. Prior to joining Open Society in 2005, she developed exhibitions, publications, and web content for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She is an executive board member of Women Photograph and Peace is Loud. Yukiko received an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business–specializing in leadership and change management, strategy, and sustainable business and innovation–and a BA in art history and women’s studies from Barnard College, Columbia University.
