Ma Design: Fashion (Distinction)
Fashion Designer
This project has aimed to investigate the idea that architectural exteriors and interiors can be considered through the philosophy of Japanese aesthetics and that this learning can then be utilised within the design of fashion garments. Chaos theory, recognised as the chaotic, fractal nature of our world, can give new insight, power and wisdom. The irregular shapes allow the workings of the world to be seen from a different perspective. Similarly, Japanese aesthetics embrace the irregular and imperfect, a key example being Wabi-Sabi, and often focus on natural, impermanent and humble elements (Juniper, 2003). The proposed outcome of the project was to design a garment within an installation, which had been informed by my research into chaos theory and the spirit of Japanese aesthetics. I created tests for fabric and material design by deconstructing Wabi-Sabi craft techniques within pattern making. I wanted to develop shapes by using stand-work, experimenting with unconventional materials leading to an imperfect result that highlights the beauty of a chaotic aesthetic.
Project Researcher Specialist
The aim of the project is to discover how the nature of chaos theory compares with Japanese aesthetics Wabi-Sabi. Could we argue that Wabi- Sabi relates to chaos theory? For instance, we can find that both are irregular, asymmetry and unpredictable. However, the Japanese philosophy of Wabi- Sabi is the beauty of the natural world; Chaos theory is the chaos of the natural word. I find that in nature we do not know what will happen in the end, but we could predict the future from previous data. In other words, sometimes the prediction is an accident. After all, chaos is beautiful. Recognising the chaotic, fractal nature of our world can give us new insight, power and wisdom. It makes us see the picture from a different perspective. In contrast, Wabi-Sabi focuses on the natural, impermanent and humble elements of simple and often rustic objects. They discover the innate beauty found in the exquisite random patterns left by the flow of nature.

Was responsible for assigning work and managing the rota.
