During my promotion at Maastricht University I have conducted research in the area of psychophysiological resilience mechanisms with a focus on positive outcome expectancies (optimism) and open awareness in the present moment (mindfulness). My studies have elucidated the pathways and mechanisms between psychological resilience and physiological outcome variables in stressful settings. Some important physiological outcomes I have studied include cortisol, inflammatory markers, wound healing, heart rate, and skin conductance.In general, our research data shows that optimism and mindfulness contributed in reducing the overall stress response, improving cognitive and behavioral functioning. and improving physical recovery.
