I am a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Dundee, and LLB Programme Director.I specialise in Scots trusts, succession and tax law, particularly capital taxes. I became a full-time academic in 2013, after practising as a tax, trusts and succession solicitor. I teach tax law (our most popular elective!), succession, trusts and aspects of family law. My main areas of interest are capital taxes, tax planning and Scots trusts and succession. In 2016, I completed the reissue of the Trusts, Trustees and Judicial Factors section of the Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia of the Laws of Scotland. I regularly write about trusts and succession for Lexis and the Journal of the Law Society of Scotland. I'm Vice Chair of the Scottish Fundraising Adjudication Panel, which deals with complaints about fundraising in Scotland.I maintain strong links to the profession as a member of the Law Society of Scotland sub-committees. I am currently examiner for the Law Society of Scotland's qualified lawyer transfer exams and an External Examiner at Edinburgh Napier University. I have previously been an examiner for the Society of Estate Practitioners Trusts (Scotland) paper, and an External Examiner at Kings College London.I am a Senator at the University of Dundee and have a role as Student's Assessor hearing appeals on matters such as discipline, plagiarism and termination appeals. I have a particular interest in widening access to law. In 2017, I was delighted to be appointed trustee of the Lawscot Foundation, the Law Society of Scotland's charity to support the education and development of aspiring solicitors from less advantaged backgrounds.
