For Back Philanthropy Month 2019 explored and shared Black women’s influence in and upon philanthropy around the world, most especially those Black Women leaders who have chosen to intentionally leverage their own wealth, influence and/or privilege for the greater good. Each speaker will share more about their personal path and leadership in shaping their family's legacy in philanthropy. Additionally, Melanie Brown of the Gates Foundation, a Fellow at the Inequalities Institute at the London School of Economics, also shared about her research on Black Women in Philanthropy. August is Black Philanthropy Month and in partnership with King Baudouin Foundation United States, AR Global Philanthropy Advisors, Philanthropy Unbound, and Faces of Giving, MP curated a conversation on Diaspora investments both within the US and/or their country of origin. Whether home is the United States, Kenya, New Zealand or Brazil every-day citizens from the Diaspora, each with a proven commitment to Giving Voice to Fuel Change are using their own assets, or working in partnership with others to give back to their communities within the U.S., or in their country of origin. Over the past two decades, the number of philanthropy support organizations (PSOs) focusing on Africa has increased. And while they represent different histories, motivations, approaches, and interests they share a common interest in leveraging philanthropy to address issues affecting the lives of communities in Africa. The diversity of PSOs located inside and outside of Africa presents an opportunity to widen the reach of philanthropy.The APSO Initiative recognizes that building strong relationships can help PSOs to deepen their impact and leverage philanthropy resources to benefit African communities. Fork Office LLC houses the network of film & television, philanthropic and advocacy organizations/companies co-founded by the Disney-Hauser family including the Daphne Foundation, Gbowee Peace Foundation USA, Fork Films LLC and Peace is Loud.Responsible for vetting potential new projects and initiatives to ensure alignment with vision, strategy, goals, and current capabilities. Identify and optimizes cross-entity opportunities, maximizing the impact of each initiative toward the realization of the enterprise’s mission, while ensuring tax and legal compliance across and between all entities. Major accomplishments include:• Led a two-year reorganization of the principle’s network of media, advocacy, and philanthropic institutions including strategic re-vision, branding, program expansion, and streamlining of technology and human resources, including the creation of a performance review system.• Direct oversight of five directors and general supervision of 15 team members of both nonprofit and for profit organizations and companies including strategic guidance, tax and legal compliance, and cross-entity collaboration. • Fiscal management and/or oversight of operational budgets estimated at $1.9 million across three entities. • Assisted Peace is Loud with strategic conversations, including the creation of a speakers bureau to ensure women advocates are fairly compensated on the global speaking circuit including the negotiating speaking fees, travel, and recognition.• Supervised the start up of three productions including the creation of three Limited Liability Companies (LLC), proper insurance coverage and the initial hiring of production staff.• Supervised the centralization of employee benefits across five entities, including the hiring of the company’s first human resource director.

Manage all strategic philanthropic giving, both domestic and international, of a high-net worth family. In conjunction with donors establish and manage annual priorities for both their personal giving and the family's Donor Advised Fund (DAF); conduct foreign site/field visits, manage tax and legal compliance on foreign grants, assist grantees with identifying and securing capacity building assistance, and oversee reporting and evaluation of grant funded projects. Total annual giving approximately at $1.8 million. Major accomplishments include:• Led the donors’ expansion into international development beginning with a $500,000 investment in education, and subsequently growing that portfolio to include alternative energy, micro-enterprise, and capacity building, with a cross-cutting focus on women with a total investment of $1.7 million over the last six years.• Co-developed and staffed an intensive community-based response to the 2014 Ebola crisis in West Point, Liberia, including a medically-led awareness and outreach program, building the capacity of the local health clinic and providing emergency funds to families in need or quarantined due to suspected contact.• Managed implementation of alternative energy/micro-enterprise pilot project in Liberia, which was featured in the World Bank 2009 Progress Report. The pilot was also successful in leveraging USAID support for replication in 80 schools.

Private family foundation with a primary interest in confronting the causes and consequences of poverty in New York City. Assets in excess of $11 million with annual giving approximately $800,000.Manages foundation operations including the grant portfolio, proposal evaluation and funding recommendations, board communication and meetings, and database tracking. Actively works with grantees on fund development, relationship building and sustainability.

Provided technical assistance for grantee organizations, including funding research and collaborative needs. Managed all aspects of the Post-doctoral Fellowship program, including the development of application and marketing materials. Conducted research and analysis and provided funding recommendations. Established an electronic communications network between board, staff and grantees, allowing for the evaluation of proposals and reports via the Internet. Initiated and created a database for tracking grantee compliance, reports and disbursements. Researched and consulted on the development of the Foundation’s web site.

A national organization, CASA recruits and trains volunteers to serve as an independent voice in court for abused and neglected children. Recruited, screened and trained community, professional and corporate volunteers. Initiated and secured the expansion of program services into three surrounding counties. Enhanced and expanded 35-hour volunteer training course. Shared in generating increased funding by over $35,000 in a 12-month period. Built a technologically enhanced research library, and initiated and created program’s web site.
