Vision Zero is a strategy for eliminating all those killed to movement and serious injuries, while increasing the safe, useful, fair mobility for everyone. First introduced in Sweden in the 1990s, Vision Zero turned out to be successful throughout Europe -and in 2019, as part of the work of the Center for Urbanism, we launched it in Almaty, but after years we lost its relevance due to certain mistakes and goals that were not reached. My task is to revive the relevance of the concept by changing the course of strategy and rethinking its values ​​and doing everything possible for its effective implementation.

Almaty is one of the largest cities of the country. In January 2016, the Almaty-2020 Development Program was adopted, which should ensure the development of all key areas, including the economy, the social sphere, public safety and law and order, infrastructure, ecology and land resources, public services.The Center of Urban Studies deals with the development of a quality urban environment. The main task of is to develop proposals and solutions for urban planning and the development of high-quality public spaces in Almaty.In 2016, the Center surveyed 130 green areas with a total area of ​​570 hectares. Architects, designers, environmentalists and simply not indifferent citizens took part in a large-scale survey of urban parks, boulevards, alleys and groves. As a result of this, at the beginning of 2017, a workshop "Almaty Parks" was held, at which the citizens developed 23 draft design concepts for the reconstruction of parks in different parts of the city. 8 parks were reconstructed in 2017, and local residents took part in the construction process. Other 15 are being reconstructed in 2018 and 2019.The Center regularly organizes meetings with active citizens to collect opinions and suggestions. One of the active platforms for the involvement of citizens in the processes of urban decisions is the project “WeAlmaty”, funded by the European Union, whose partners are the British Council, KBTU and City Hall.Together with Almatygenplan Research Institute, international consultants and Almaty Development Center Almaty Master Plan is being developed. The master plan is a document of the strategic spatial planning of the city for 30 years. The master plan describes the development of not only the urban area, but also takes into account the integrated development of the agglomeration, with the active participation of experts and citizens. During the development of the document, a vision is formed of what the city and its individual areas should become in the future.
