Known as a modern, unconventional composer by his peers, what makes Zach such a unique composer/arranger is his unquenchable thirst to find compelling, new musical ideas. Pushing the boundaries of modern jazz harmony, using unique meters to propel the rhythm of his pieces, and his particular way of composing and developing ideas create music that is unlike any other music you’ve heard. His style, doesn’t easily fall into one category, but rather bridges the gaps between the wonderful musical styles that have influenced him. Having a diverse set of influences as a composer, Zach’s musical style of writing, regardless of the style or ensemble he is writing for, is fresh and inventive. Some of his most significant influences in jazz are Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Charles Mingus, Bill Evans, and Thelonious Monk. In the classical world, Zach is most influenced by the Romantic and Impressionist composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, including, Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, and Chopin. Zach’s musical interests don’t stop there though. Musicians like Frank Zappa, the Beatles, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder have also made an impact on Zach’s unique, modern approach. Each influence, including many not listed here, create more depth of knowledge and skill in Zach’s writing that he applies to every note he writes on the page. Zach has had the wonderful privilege of studying with some fantastic composers and arrangers. Some of the people he has studied with include: Jim McNeely, Cecil Bridgewater, Pete McGuiness, Peter Paulsen, Robert Maggio, Mark Rimple, and Van Steifel. During his time William Paterson, Zach had the opportunity to have one of his arrangements played by the legendary trumpeter Randy Brecker.
