I love to help people expand their opportunities, communicate effortlessly, and achieve their goals efficiently. This is what drew me to teaching nearly 7 years ago and what draws me to the IT field now. And though working in education and IT seem different on the surface, I believe they share the core principle of supporting people.As a head instructor for an ESL school I get to use communication, problem-solving and organizational skills to help students develop language skills to reach their goals whether those be to pass a school entrance exam, further their career, or communicate across borders.In my previous position as a software helpdesk engineer I used these same skills to help customers achieve their business targets by configuring and troubleshooting data forecasting and scheduling software.Being at the intersection between education and IT has enabled me to expand my current role by introducing tech into the classroom and providing tech support to a small family business. I started working here just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, so on top of learning a new role at a new company I was tasked with transitioning many of our lessons online. This project was successful and inspired me to incorporate more technology into our in-person lessons as well. Naturally introducing new tech and devices comes with new challenges- configuration, hardware and maintenance, and troubleshooting. As a small family run business we don't have a dedicated IT department, so I gladly took on those responsibilities. And through this I realized that although I enjoy supporting my students directly in the classroom, I enjoy supporting them through technology even more.As a teacher I try to inspire my students to be lifelong learners- to always be adopting and adapting to new information. In that spirit, recently I have been upskilling and developing technical experience through certifications and personal projects hoping to return to the IT industry. I believe there I can make the most impact in supporting people to reach their goals.
