About Zach Thacker
The project I have been working on for the past 8 years has been focused on the modeling, fabrication, and measurement of an energy harvesting device. This device consists of a near-field metamaterial coupled to a rectenna. When heated the metamaterial radiates a tuned THz radiation that is coupled to the rectenna. The rectenna (antenna with rectifying diode at feed point) then focuses the THz to the diode where it is rectified to usable dc power.My simulation based modeling experiences have aided in material and geometry selection to ensure continual improvements in both power and efficiency. I have used FEM based modeling software such as COMSOL and ANSYS HFSS for solving complex multi-physics systems that include both thermal and electromagnetic phenomena. Through my time working on this project I have designed, acquired equipment, and built facilities for the fabrication of our device. Using these facilities, I managed a group of both graduate and undergraduate students to develop our process for device quality, timely throughput, and economic efficiency. These three qualities of our device fabrication process have been instrumental in meeting our grant milestones on time and within budget.Another part of my work has been to design and build instrumentation for the characterization and validation of the devices. These instruments have ranged from custom instrumentation amplifiers to a femtosecond laser driven Terahertz spectrometer. Along with the design and construction of these instruments, I have also written all software used to control the systems using MATLAB and LabView software packages.Recently, I have been working on capturing some of our novel IP by helping to write detailed provisional patents. This work has been challenging as it is exercising a new muscle I haven't yet used. Ultimately, I have found that working on patents with my team and patent attorneys has given me a few more tools that I enjoy using.
