  • Millsaps College
    Teaching Assistant
    Millsaps College Aug 2013 - May 2015
Teaching Assistant for the following Courses: Botany Introductory Cell Biology GeneticsComparative Animal PhysiologyBeing a Teaching Assistant for these courses involved understanding the labs for the week, in order to assist students taking the courses, and being available to tutor students. Labs would need to be partially or fully set up before class and cleaned up after the lab was complete. I needed to be able to run agarose gels, pour plates of agarose media, make agarose media, care for fish that were used in physiology experiments, grow plates of bacteria, collect various plants around campus, grade quizzes and other assignments, organize slides, use dissecting and compound microscopes, and help with whatever the professor teaching the lab would need for that week’s lab activities. In addition to my position as a Teaching Assistant, working in the biology department afforded me other opportunities within the department, such as being able to help with miscellaneous short or long-term jobs and projects. During a semester, I was asked to take care of the greenhouse, which involves watering plants and composting. I have helped with the care and maintenance of the fresh and salt water fish tanks, which involves feeding the fish, checking water salinity and other solutes, and cleaning the tank.

    Laboratory Research Assistant
    Millsaps College Jan 2013 - May 2015
Sorbency testing in the Geology Department’s Sorbency Lab, operated by Dr. Galicki. Using standardized testing techniques for various sorbents in motor oil and other fluids, mostly hydrocarbon oils. I would be responsible for setting up and running the tests and cleaning up the lab. Sorbents tested would be from grams of material—mostly organics such as wood saw dust to chicken feather—in a few liters of oil up to many pounds of material in fifty gallons of oil. As much of the oil as possible used in the lab would be recycled and used again for other tests. The sorbency of the materials tested are calculated using a data sheet in Microsoft Excel.
  • Millsaps College
Hhmi And J.P. Mckeown Research Fellow
    Millsaps College Jun 2013 - Jul 2014
I worked on a few biology projects at the Kaxil Kiuic Biocultural Reserve and Oxkutzcab and the surrounding area in Yucatán, Mexico. The main project was data collection and analysis of the metabolic rates of tropical dry forest birds. My responsibilities involved setting up and taking down mist nets, handling wild birds, setting up, running, and taking data from a flow-through respirometer to estimate the metabolic rates of the captured birds. The birds would need to be cared for—fed and given water during the day—and released in the morning. Measurements were taken at night between 8:00pm and 6:00am and mist nets would be opened late morning or early afternoon between 11:00am and 3:00pm. Trouble-shooting of the respirometer and computers involved in recording the measurements was also necessary. During the summer of 2013, the mist nets were used to conduct a survey of the local bat population. Mist nets would be opened and bats would be captured after sundown and into the early morning, measured, and released immediately after measurements were taken. This project involved working with wild bats, working with mist nets, and using field guides to identify species. I also helped with the ongoing project to survey the large mammal population in and surrounding the Kaxil Kiuic Biocultural Reserve during both summers. The project focused on the jaguar population in the area, but other mammals, wild cats, birds, and other animal species were documented. Trail cameras were set up in grids, then taken down a few weeks later and the pictures were analyzed.
  • Millsaps College
    Laboratory Research Assistant
    Millsaps College Jul 2012 - May 2013
Worked on a genetics research project to identify proteins that interact with the SNXA gene which controls the G1 and G2/M phases of the cell cycle in Aspergillus nidulans in Millsaps College’s Genetics Lab, run by Dr. Anglin. I worked with another student over the summer and during a school year on this project, assisting Dr. Anglin, resulting in research published in the paper “Restraint of the G2/M Transition by the SR/RRM Family mRNA Shuttling Binding Protein SNXAHRB1 in Aspergillus nidulans,” in the journal Genetics. The work I did was only part of the multi-year project, but I gained invaluable lab experience. Responsibilities included fungal strain propagation and crossing, isolating proteins, running agarose electrophoresis gels, lyophilization, making agarose media from scratch and pouring plates, using autoclaves, using incubators, PCR, fluorescence microscopy, SDS-PAGE, immunoprecipitaiton, and organizing fungal stocks.
