Zach Kates joined Thornton Tomasetti in 1998 and, for approximately 18 years, specialized in the management, structural analysis and design of complex building structures, including new design of large scale commercial and healthcare projects, and the renovation of existing and historic structures. Since 2010, Zach has focused on growing Thornton Tomasetti’s forensic engineering practice. Currently he leads the forensic practice in Texas and supports forensic work in the south and across the nation. He has performed numerous forensic engineering investigations including damage assessment of existing facilities, cause and origin analysis of building and bridge failures, evaluation of construction defects, and building envelope assessment. He has been involved in emergency response for several building and bridge collapses including stabilization and deconstruction and has performed remedial design for failed structures. During my stay in the Washington DC office, my work experience involved the design and project management of large, complex structural engineering projects in healthcare (Johns Hopkins New Clinical Building and Fort Benning Martin Army Community Replacement Hospital), commercial projects (Reston Station), and historic renovation and adaptive reuse (Cannon House Office Building and St. Elizabeths Center Building). My focus also included structural forensic investigation work including expert witness testimony, and property loss consulting for the insurance industry.
