Profile bio

About Zachary Dashner

I am a highly motivated researcher specializing in plant biology and genetic engineering, with a strong passion for plant breeding and sustainable agriculture. My Ph.D. research in Horticulture focused on characterizing metal transporter genes involved in cadmium uptake and accumulation in Theobroma cacao, the plant used to make chocolate. The secondary aim of this work was to alter the selectivity of those transporters in order to reduce the presence of this non-essential and toxic element in chocolate.Throughout my academic journey, I have gained extensive experience in plant biology and molecular techniques. I excel in plant tissue culture and propagation, including sterile culture techniques, micropropagation, and somatic embryogenesis of T. cacao. I am skilled in A. tumefaciens-mediated transformations for T. cacao and A. thaliana, and I have pioneered a R. rhizogenes-mediated transformation protocol for T. cacao, enabling the study of root-specific genes. My molecular biology skills encompass various techniques such as binary vector design, cloning, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gene expression analysis (RT-PCR), and gene editing using CRISPR. I am proficient in plasmid extractions and have expertise in working with yeast and E. coli cultures for genetic manipulation and expression studies. In addition, I possess strong bioinformatics and statistical analysis skills. I am proficient in R programming, allowing me to develop scripts and pipelines for data processing, analysis, and visualization. I am experienced in applying statistical methods and hypothesis testing to assess research findings' significance. I am also skilled in constructing phylogenetic trees and mining genomic databases to support research projects. As a dedicated researcher committed to sustainable agriculture and cultivar development, I am eager to apply my skills and expertise in a plant breeding or R&D role. If you are seeking a motivated and accomplished researcher with a strong background in molecular techniques and a focus on plant breeding, I invite you to connect about potential collaborations or career opportunities!
