The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Environmental Health, Division of Laboratory Sciences, Organic Analytical Toxicology Branch, Pesticide Lab is responsible for measuring concentrations of toxicants in the general US population and in support of many important epidemiologic studies in collaboration with top researchers in environmental health. In addition, the lab provides significant laboratory support to several emergency response situations including pesticide and diethylene glycol poisonings. The data generated in the pesticide lab plays a significant role in the CDC National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals. This report is the most comprehensive assessment to date of the U.S population’s exposure to chemicals in the environment.As a contractor through CDC Foundation at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I have successfully automated the sample preparation procedure for the Flame Retardants/DAPs method with minimal team lead supervision to increase the accuracy and efficiency of routine sample analysis of 3,500+ samples yearly. Furthermore, I have streamlined several routine laboratory operations, including, but not limited to the creation of an Excel template to identify mislabeled/incorrect sample vials during sample processing, creation of a macro to manage freezer/sample inventory using a master inventory list, and the creation of a tracking system for the methods standard check to ensure the HPLC/MS-MS instrument is performing properly prior to each injection cycle.

I worked under the supervision of Dr. Adam Kiefer on studying dihydropyridines and substituent replacement in an attempt to create a library of dihydropyridine pathways to determine which is the most effective pathway. This was done in an effort to replace the standard synthesis project in student Organic Chemistry labs, the highest yielding pathway would then become its replacement.
