Zach Eichholz is the Chief Resilience Manager and Emergency Operations Coordinator for the City of Cape Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida. He received a Bachelor of Science in Sustainability Studies (August 2016) and a Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Sciences (May 2019) from the Florida Institute of Technology before being hired in June 2019 by the City of Cape Canaveral to help write the City’s first-ever Resiliency Action Plan. Today, with this action plan in place, Zach is in charge of Cape Canaveral’s Resilience Division – set within the Community and Economic Development Department – where he oversees the implementation of various sustainability and resilience-based initiatives. Projects to date have included procuring new alternative-fueled City fleet vehicles, building out a network of public EV charging stations, hazard preparedness and climate-related infrastructure hardening, implementing low-impact development-based policies, facilitating ecological restoration projects, scoping and implementing rooftop solar installations for operational decarbonization, multi-agency external stakeholder engagement and cooperation, and the installation of remote sensor sites for improved real-time environmental monitoring. Before this position, Zach worked as a project assistant through his time as a master’s student researching and writing the City of Satellite Beach 2017 Sustainability Action Plan; developing a series of actionable targets designed to reduce the City’s environmental footprint and mitigate future climate change impacts. His local efforts of environmental stewardship helped him to garner a nomination for the 2018 and 2024 Brevard 4 Under 40 awards. Zach was also the recipient of Sierra Club Florida’s 2023 Osprey Award, which is “presented for extraordinary effort by a governmental staff person to promote or effect changes in policy or practice to protect or preserve Florida's environment”.
