As a Senior Engineering Geologist at Quanta Subsurface, I primarily manage the daily operations of the geotechnical portions of the transmission line construction group. We are typically involved in projects that are in limited access areas and often times are helicopter supported. I provide project management from initial project planning through to execution of the site work and finally to project close out. Our main tasks include geologic site characterization and monitoring, as well as construction materials testing support, and observation of load testing activities. We also provide support for ancillary activities during the transmission line construction such as rockfall mitigation and excavation safety services. Typical office duties are at the project management level. During initiation and planning stages of the projects, I am preparing cost estimates, providing technical data to field personnel, assigning staff and their requisite duties, procuring subcontractor services, and establishing project logistics such as lodging and transportation. When the project moves into the execution and monitoring phases, my role becomes more supervisory. Weekly operations meetings are held with field staff to ensure technical and administrative project controls are being achieved. I provide senior-level review of the collected field data for compliance to project specifications as well as generating the final compliance reporting. I am also responsible for invoicing these projects, which includes reviewing and approving subcontractor costs. Finally, as the project moves into the close-out phase, I am responsible collecting the applicable project related correspondence and documents, both hard copy and digital, for the project file for storage. I also prepare the close-out documents, which includes project summaries, representative photographs, etc.

While at Ninyo & Moore my primarily role was project manager of materials testing and observation portion of construction projects. My responsibilities included coordination and oversight of all field activities, onsite evaluation of the work being performed by the field technicians and inspectors inclusive of equipment inspection, review all project related paperwork inclusive of project budgets, and the maintenance of proper and complete files of field and laboratory data, reports, letters, and other pertinent project data. Some of my additional responsibilities were to interact with clients at meetings and functions. I attended functions as a representative of Ninyo & Moore at functions such as Arizona Rock Products Association and the American Public Works Association. I eventually moved to Prescott in order to help manage a satellite office.

I started my career in the field at Foree & Vann, Inc. where I was the geologist responsible for conducting a variety of tasks for geotechnical investigations. I spent the next 4 years performing field tasks including geologic mapping, soil borings, and soil sampling for traditional geotechnical reports. I also performed a variety of geophysical methods such as seismic refraction surveys, field resistivity surveys, and ground penetrating radar surveys. After being promoted, I was brought into the office to help with generating geotechnical reports. My initial responsibilities were to analyze laboratory and field data with various engineering and geological software applications and preparing cost estimates for geotechnical and construction testing and observation services. Eventually, I began managing geotechnical engineering projects from initiation to close-out and supervising the geotechnical engineering field and laboratory staff.
