Research And Development Engineer
After graduation I was hired as a Research and Development Engineer at Greene Tool Systems, a custom tool manufacturer in Dayton. Its customers include DMAX, Cummins, and ISCAR. During my first weeks there I was assigned to learn how to use various tool measurement machines and how to implement them into the tool-making process. This involved creating work procedures for each machine and educating the operators on the proper use of each machine. Another project involved robotic repair and the realignment of a faulty automatic loader of a tool grinder. I also completed two shop floor redesigns. This involved placing machinery in a more efficient and lean manner, where the time and movement of the operators was reduced. Later on I worked on many different turn-key projects, creating different end-mill and drill designs that would efficiently complete the specified part or parts. This involved constant communication with the client about different designs and concepts. This experience helped improve my customer service and interaction skills and my 2D and 3D drawing skills.
Utilities Co-Op
During my second term at Dannon I worked as a summer co-op employee in the utilities department at the Minster plant. I worked on many different projects. One of those projects involved improving the mapping of different utilities throughout the pant. This involved the creation and implementation of a mapping and identification system for fire lines, cranes, and electrical rooms. Another project I worked on involved optimizing and automating the utilities daily report. This system automatically gathered data from various sensors, including steam generation, water usage, and power usage, then presented the information in an easy-to-read report that was sent to plant leaders. I also helped any utilities contractors who visited the plant with completing their tasks. The summer included a trip to Dannon’s North American headquarters in New York to meet with other interns and co-op employees and to learn more about Dannon’s corporate activates.
Safety Co-Op
I was a co-op employee in the safety department during the fall semester. Dannon is a major supplier of yogurt worldwide and has been in business since 1942. I worked at the plant in Minster, Ohio, which is the company’s largest U.S. plant. This plant employs around 450 people. My job was to revamp the Lock Out–Tag Out procedures for the filling lines. I met with each production line leadership team (18 lines in total) to learn about the processes they used to safely de-energize the line. I then wrote detailed procedures that described these steps, made sure the information was easy to read and distributed it in individual binders. Once the binders were completed, I met with the line operators and maintenance to show them the correct and safe way of conducting each operation. This work allowed me to improve my communication and technical writing skills.
