As a deckhand on a private yacht, I got the opportunity to travel by sea to Puerto Vallarta and La Paz, Mexico; Catalina Island and Seattle. My duties were diverse and many. I basically had to do whatever my captain told me. My daily responsibilities while on dock included drying the boat every morning and performing a variety of maintenance projects, from painting to oil changes to buffing out scratches. While traveling, I kept watch in rotation; where it was my responsibility to stay on course and continuously monitor the radar, adjusting accordingly in order to avoid collision courses. While on trips with the owner and his family, I continued daily maintenance as well as served as their bartender and server. I was also responsible for being their water taxi with our tender.

As Captain Oates' maintenance aide, I provided support on the 10 different boats that he managed in Newport Harbor. I performed daily maintenance revolving around the cleaning of the exteriors, interiors, and mechanical maintenance.

For my past three consecutive jobs, I have been promoted to positions with greater responsibility twice in each job. How did I do this? Firstly, by patiently working hard in the positions I was in when no promotion was in sight. Secondly, by taking initiative through concrete action that demonstrated my desire to learn new skills. Lastly, by jumping at opportunities whether or not I felt ready. The BEST and FASTEST way to learn a new skill is to just start doing it. So if you want a promotion, take it.
