Zachary Sefcovic is a senior meteorology major at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. He has had a passion for weather his entire life. When he was younger, he would read with his grandmother, who would have a hard time hearing and would have the black caption boxes on the television. One day, his grandmother had him read the caption boxes to her, specifically during a Cleveland weather forecast. She was absolutely thrilled. So, she would always have Zach read the weather broadcast to her any time he was over her house. This seemingly minor thing in his childhood has turned into a life-long career goal, and he has pursued it ever since. Mr. Sefcovic is looking for a career in the operational or research fields of meteorology. During the summer of 2013, he has had the opportunity to work at the National Weather Service Office in Newport/Morehead City, North Carolina. This experience has shown him both operational and research fields of meteorology with a research project on the climatology of hurricanes and their impacts in eastern North Carolina, while gaining experience with forecasting, outreach, and communication. After graduation, he believes that he will pursue graduate school for additional experience in learning about different aspects of weather, gaining more knowledge about forecasting, and participating in a research project that will support a future career.Mr. Sefcovic enjoys all types of weather: severe, tropical, winter, marine, and aviation. He also enjoys some of the more applied meteorological areas including hydrology and climate studies. Zach also has an interest in the societal impact of weather. Each offers something different to ponder and a challenge that Zach would be willing to take on. With familiarity in working in each of the mentioned areas, Mr. Sefcovic is a prepared meteorologist ready to take on any career in this challenging scientific field.
