I-Corps MentorTech Launch Arizona May 2019 - May 2022To date, I have served as a NSF i-Corps Mentor twice in 2019 and once in 2022. The groups I've mentored include: 1) a solar startup company, 2) an Agile Training and Coaching company, and 3) and company developing an assessment tool for elder care. The groups have been based in Arizona, California, and Mexico. Tech Launch Arizona partnered with CONACYT's Sistema de Centros de Investigación and asked me to serve as a bilingual tech advisor with partners in Chihuahua, Mexico.ABOUT NSF I-CORPSThe goal of the NSF I-Corps program is to educate teams about customer discovery and lean startup methodology. The University of Arizona Site Program teaches this information with the help of valuable University partners including the University of Arizona Law School and Libraries. A team of experienced entrepreneurs and educators facilitates instruction. The information taught, combined with the insights from at least 20 customer interviews, will help teams make a “go” or “no go” decision. A “go” may mean proceeding to the NSF Teams Program, which is the next step in the I-Corps path. There, teams receive $50,000, additional education and speak with 100 customers. “Go” could also mean pursuing a startup or doing more research to prepare the technology for the marketplace.ABOUT TECH LAUNCH ARIZONATech Launch Arizona is the office of the University of Arizona that creates social and economic impact through bringing the inventions stemming from UA research from the lab to the world through commercial pathways. The office provides resources, programs and experts to help refine ideas that start in UA labs, and grow them into new products and thriving businesses that benefit society. While most of these inventions are commercialized through licenses to existing companies, many also become the basis for startup companies – a process that TLA fosters through its Business Development programs.
