Zach Dodson is a practitioner of narrative design in many forms. His game studio, Interactive Tragedy, LTD, has produced narrative game prototypes and attracted grants and awards, such as the 2022 New Zealand Film Commission Interactive Development Fund and the NZGDA’s Excellence in Diversity and Representation Award 2023. He is currently working on KUU, a companion book and video game which combine traditional print design and creative writing with new approaches in interactive fiction and visual narrative. A book chapter on his process appears in The Experimental Book Object (Routledge Digital Literary Studies, 2023).As an award-winning author (Bats of the Republic), he has combined the fields of creative writing with design and interaction in a hybrid practice that has garnered international acclaim. He founded Featherproof Books, which has published dozens of awarded novels, bringing many young literary stars to light. True to its hybrid nature, his own work takes many forms including illuminated novels, games, television, academic research and community-building. His illuminated novel, Bats of the Republic, was published by Doubleday in 2015. The Washington Post called it “a glorious demonstration of what old-fashioned paper can still do in the hands of a creative genius,” as one of their Notable 2015 Books. It won Print magazine’s Best of Design Award, Design Observer 50 Books of 2015, and 1st place at The New York Book Show. His most recent design was for Riddance by Shelley Jackson, finalist for the Believer Book Award; and other designs were featured in Art in Book Form and Fully Booked: Ink on Paper, Design and Concepts for New Publications (Gestalten).He is currently an Associate Professor teaching Design and Writing for Games at Victoria University of Wellington. There, he co-steers the Visual Narrative Lab, coordinates the MFA in Creative Practice for Visual Narrative, and serves as Associate Dean of Postgraduate taught. Previously, he founded a Masters degree programme in Visual Narrative at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland. These disparate threads weave together to form a creative practice that stands at the cultural vanguard of the exciting field of Narrative Design.
