At Longview, I conduct grant investigations in artificial intelligence (AI) and long-term wellbeing. As part of this role, I research new program areas to benefit future generations. The role involves a mix of impact estimates, networking with people working in the AI space, and development of new projects.

From fall 2018 through Spring 2020 I was the chair of the Animal Advocacy Research Fund Oversight Committee, which oversees the distribution of approximately $300,000 annually in funding for research related to effective animal advocacy.

The Animal Advocacy Research Fund issues a call for proposals every four months. During my time the fund distributed over 30 grants ranging from $2,000 to $44,000. I was a reviewer for proposals and helped to oversee the operation of the fund.

The Global Priorities Institute exists to develop and promote rigorous, scientific approaches to the question of how appropriately motivated actors can do good more effectively. As a participant in the Early Career Conference Programme, I applied principles of behavioral economics to study mechanisms to increase cooperation between generations and improve forecasts of future events.

I managed a project on the implementation of evidence-based policies for Dean Karlan, Co-Director of the Global Poverty Research Lab at Northwestern’s Buffett Institute, Alan Gerber, Dilley Professor of Political Science at Yale University, and Betsy Levy-Paluck, Princeton University Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs. The project sought to design a randomized controlled trial on effective techniques for disseminating policy research.

I managed data analysis for six "gold standard" randomized controlled trials by economist Dean Karlan, including studies of microsavings, microenterprise training, and SMS-based financial reminders. I conducted ten weeks of field research in Tamale Ghana, reviewing implementation of an extensive survey on farmer education, insurance, and agricultural support. I also coded two pieces of research software for IPA: a Python program to translate programmed surveys into word document form and a data analysis program.

I taught a classroom of 20 students in a high-poverty school, including literacy and math after being selected from approximately 45,000 applicants to join a national teacher corps of recent college graduates. My placement in Bridgeport, Connecticut involved a full schedule of professional development activities, including seminars and learning teams.

I managed cases for 25 immigrant clients from from initial consultation until submission of application or motion with the support of the Arthur Liman Public Interest Fellowship at Yale Law School. This included 20 Spanish-speaking clients and four French-speaking clients. I filed court motions and drafted visa applications to protect immigrant victims of domestic violence and sex assault.

I studied informal moneylending practices in Peru with the support of the Yale College Public Service Research Grant. I developed a network in three small cities in order to interview over 30 informal moneylenders. The research was entirely in Spanish and concluded with a 20-page final report and analysis of lending practices in Peru.
