In the role of Global Engagement Coordinator, I promoted study/research abroad experiences, served as a resource for the School of Education’s international scholar community, and worked to help scholars and their families adapt to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and life in the United States. As part of my work to facilitate J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa applications, I developed a comprehensive process to centralize visiting scholar recruitment and visa applications throughout all ten academic departments in the School of Education. I also managed social media, web, email, and print communications and worked to elevate the profile of the Global Engagement Office, which formally launched in 2018.

As Program and Communications Coordinator for International Student Services at UW-Madison, I managed the department’s co-curricular education portfolio, consisting of 100+ programs and events per academic year. A large part of this work involved the development, implementation, and evaluation of student-centered programming designed to 1) connect international students with resources for holistic success, 2) bolster retention, 3) prepare students for employment, and 4) foster intercultural learning.I oversaw communications to 6,200+ international students via email, print, web, Youtube YouKu, as well as a range of social media platforms, and managed annual budgets exceeding $71,000 – including the budget for the Global Badger Experience Grant for student organizations, which I created. By far the most rewarding aspect of this work was my responsibility to hire, train, supervise, and mentor a team of four student interns.

My work in the office of State Representative Mandela Barnes was through the Network Fellows program, an initiative of the Wisconsin Collaborative Education Research Network in the School of Education. As one of the first two Fellows appointed, I had the tremendous opportunity to help pilot the Network Fellows program while supporting the work of Rep Barnes on the State’s K-12 Education Committee.I authored a cosponsorship memorandum for Representative Barnes’ Community Schools bill that was circulated throughout the Legislature and used as a guide for media interviews, drafted briefing materials, and wrote correspondence to constituents. Additionally, I cultivated relationships between policymakers in the Legislature and experts from the UW-Madison School of Education to inform statewide education policy and to guide research priorities on campus.

As Advising Coordinator in the Study Abroad Resource Center, I oversaw peer advising for IAP’s 200+ study abroad programs worldwide. This involved hiring, training, and directly supervising 20 undergraduate peer advisors who helped fellow students select and apply for study abroad programs. In addition to managing day-to-day operations in the Resource Center, I also oversaw classroom outreach, led “How to Fund Study Abroad” workshops, and coordinated Resource Center Open House events and others for the greater campus community.

In my final year at Valparaiso University, I applied my international study and work experience in Germany to support study abroad initiatives stateside. I wrote and distributed the weekly “Valpo Voyager” email newsletter to 900+ prospective study abroad students and co-led pre-departure workshops to prepare students for cross-cultural experiences abroad. I also staffed New International Student Welcome and Orientation, helped facilitate the application process for study abroad programs, and advised students on study abroad opportunities.

As the only non-native German speaker selected to serve as a Conversation Partner, I met weekly with a small group of beginner students enrolled in German 204 to practice and improve conversational fluency. To facilitate their learning, I prepared and led relevant, interactive discussions to utilize and expand upon existing vocabulary.

My work as Office Assistant was twofold: to assist international students coming to Germany and help German students study abroad at partner institutions worldwide. I served as a bilingual, in-residence resource person for a body of 2,000+ international students – especially for cohorts of Automotive Engineering students from Malaysia, Brazil, China, and the United States. To help them acclimate to life in Germany, I led cultural excursions, city tours, and campus tours. I also conducted workshops on how to 1) register as temporary residents of the City of Reutlingen, and 2) apply for student visas (post-arrival) from the Federal Republic of Germany.I co-facilitated “Regional Competence: USA” workshops for German students preparing to study abroad in the United States, and provided English-language resume review for students applying to work abroad. I also coordinated the Language Tandem Program and paired over 300 participants with native speakers of their target world languages to improve linguistic ability and foster cross-cultural exchange.

My internship with PCS Training and Consulting focused heavily on supporting international education initiatives in the State of Baden-Württemberg – a primary client of PCS. Key responsibilities included translating and maintaining online content in English and German and managing a Microsoft Excel database of 13,000+ recipients of scholarships from the Baden-Württemberg Foundation – one of the largest private foundations in Germany.
