About Zack Sanborn

I truly love making data useful. My background in data science is both broad & deep, the result of working on numerous computationally-intensive projects in both academic and commercial settings. I have years of experience leading teams and developing tools that utilize a wide variety of data-driven analytical techniques to extract and present meaningful insights from complex datasets.Among my proudest accomplishments, I invented a highly accurate & efficient method to analyze terabytes of whole genome sequencing data from cancerous and normal biopsies to discover a wide range of somatic alterations. This technology was the foundation of a startup I co-founded (Five3 Genomics) that grew to employ over a hundred software engineers, scientists, and lab personnel and featured an in-house CLIA-validated high-throughput sequencing lab. My team and I developed a clinically-focused commercial product (GPS Cancer) that reported therapeutically-actionable alterations & findings from tumor DNA & RNA, helping guide treatments for thousands of patients from all over the country after just a few years on the market. We later refined GPS Cancer into a test called Omics Core, one of the first Tumor-Normal mutation profiling tests to be approved by FDA.

Conceived and guided the development of multiple company products using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning techniques to improve how unstructured documents are utilized within both payer and provider workflows.
