Thesis project investigating the role of forest resources in reducing the vulnerability of communities to heat effects of climate change. I developed an index measuring the community vulnerability to heat effect using multivariate statistics (Principal Components Analysis). I then statistically compared the vulnerability index with forest resources to reveal any potential relationships. A multivariate Poisson regression was then used to evaluate the relationship of forest resources and community vulnerability to heat effect with a known indicator of extreme heat stress (heat related mortality per capita). The results highlighted that public forest and intact forest are desirable forest resource characteristics for the mediation of community vulnerability to heat effect. The results also validated the vulnerability index as an indicator of community risk to heat effects of climate change.

As a member of the urban forestry crew I worked to plant new trees as well as care for and maintain trees throughout Atlanta by pruning, staking, watering, mulching, and applying fertilizer, pesticides, and insecticides via backpack sprayer, direct application, and soil injection. I also aided in the maintenance of utility vehicles and trailers in the Trees Atlanta fleet.

As an intern at Trees Atlanta I had the opportunity to design and managed tree planting projects, lead groups of volunteers, develop and manage a weekly newsletter, and track the spread of invasive species, and generate GIS maps of tree locations, invasive species, and planting locations.
