About Zahra Karimi

My main research interest contributes to the study of the English language education of language learners who strive to become bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate through learning English as a second language. My other area of interest is in teaching Persian as second and foreign language to the immigrants and their second generations through the lens of sociocultural theory, Fund of knowledge approach, and second language acquisition. I examine the connections between second language learning and identity, culture, and family. My teaching experiences uniquely position me as an educator in an American university setting to teach our future pre- and in-service teachers the salience of English language teaching. My research interest draws from cultural, social, and historical aspects of second language learning by the scholars such as Vygotsky and Luis Moll to provide a subaltern pedagogy and practice applicable to heritage language education in the US university context, a necessary endeavor given heritage language community we witness today. My positionality as an Iranian born and American Educated Vygotskian researcher-practitioner informs my pedagogical stance.
