Fermentation Engineer
• Worked the night shift under minimal supervision to enhance the upstream and downstream processing of various kinds of Bacillus strains.• Performed dry/batch sterilization on bioreactors of four different sizes (500L, 2000L, 4000L, and 30,000L) to ensure the vessels are free of microbial contamination.• Entered confined space vessels wearing Fall Protection Harnesses and checking atmospheric conditions in regulation to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), to install spray balls and inspect the vessels for any loose piping prior to Clean-In-Place (CIP).• Performed CIP on all necessary equipment involved in bacteria production using: caustic soda, phosphoric acid, etc. in order to remove product residue and maintain an aseptic work environment.• Operated electrical/propane powered forklifts to assist with preventative maintenance on various equipment and to mix media components prior to upstream fermentation processing.• Worked with all team members to develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) on all current practices and equipment to assist any new coming trainees with routine operations.• Created triptic soy agar (TSA) plates and triptic soy broths (TSB) for cell cultivation/growth in order to inoculate bioreactors.• Assisted manager in developing working seeds in the laboratory for various kinds of Bacillus microorganisms in order to develop possible growth parameters for the mass production of selected strains • Streaked Bacillus vials onto TSA plates using the four quadrant methodology followed by the selection and inoculation of single isolated colonies into TSB flasks for initial cell augmentation.• Homogenized spray dried powder to determine the Colony Forming Units (CFUs) by performing multiple dilutions in order to conduct viable cell counts on TSA plates.• Conducted environmental testing on various equipment to check for microbial contamination and propose possible solutions on how to neutralize the source.
