My job responsibilities include managing and participating in a wide range of research projects related to the valorisation of industrial waste streams. The projects ranged from small feasibility studies to large-scale research for and with partners from industry, governmental agencies and academia. In addition, I am in charge of developing, implementing and coordinating EU-funded research and innovation projects. I succeeded in obtaining grants for approximately €0.8M.

I mainly worked on two projects related to the use of fungi to harvest microalgae and the use of electrochemical systems for hydrogen sulfide removal and phosphorous immobilization in manure and septic systems. The septic system was tested in a pilot set-up with a 300 L reactor at the municipal wastewater treatment plant of St Paul, Minnesota. In addition to conducting the research itself, I was responsible for all stages of the development and writing of research proposals to be submitted to private and public funding agencies. I obtained grants for approximately US$350k and equipment grants for about US$50k.

I lectured a course on industrial wastewater treatment in the Masters degree program at the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería in Lima. I have prepared the course content and material and introduced several innovative teaching methods and instruments such as the use of online platforms for sharing information and materials and promoting interaction among students.

My job responsibilities included developing, implementing and coordinating research projects, designing experiment and protocols, conducting chemical and biological tests and supervising other researchers, graduate and undergraduate students. Regarding project development, I obtained grants of approximately $360K from different funding agencies. Most of the projects dealt with developing new approaches for biological treatment of wastewater using bacteria and fungi.

I researched new possibilities of integrating microalgae for energy generation and wastewater treatment. This included developing experiments and building reactors on pilot- and lab-scale as well as processing and interpreting the data. In addition, I implemented a project funded by the government and coordinated with other university and industry partners. I supervised several researchers within this project, assisted in preparing lectures and taught practical exercises to Master students.

I was part of a joint project between the University of Queensland and Thiess services. The project included the running of anaerobic digestion of solid organic waste using waste from Thiess services landfill. The digestion was conducted in a 200 L reactor using fed-batch operation, relying entirely on the natural microbial consortia on the organic waste to avoid reliance on external inoculum such as sludge. The anaerobic conditions and the complete anaerobic digestion were assessed and the biogas produce determined and analysed. Online monitoring was implemented using a programmable logic controller system to control temperature, to assess biogas production and to recirculation leachate. In addition, I conducted chemical and physical chemical analyses. The results of the laboratory studies might be used for industrial purposes by Thiess services.

As the founder and general manager of the game lounge I ran the entire business, which consisted of a network of more than 80 computers in two venues. I was responsible for the general administration and for the supervision of the more technical tasks. Some activities included hiring, training and the overall supervision of the staff. I also bought and set up hardware and software. I organized events for international organizations such as the Word Cyber Games.

As the Quality Control Team Leader, I was responsible for all levels of quality control and I assembled and supervised a quality control team of two technicians / specialists. In addition, I developed a water and air-monitoring plan as part of the environmental impact statement. I also monitored the chemical and physical test procedures and results.

As the Quality Control Plant Supervisor, I was responsible for formulating the training needs of employees in order for them to achieve the best performance in terms of quality, productivity, and safety. I also directed and audited the standard operating procedures for strict implementation in accordance with standards for quality management systems and environmental management standards (ISO 9001 and ISO 14001).

As Instrumental Assay Technician, I was responsible for performing fire assays, classical wet chemistry and instrumental analysis of ores and minerals samples. I was also tracking and monitoring progress and results and verifying that test procedures were performed in accordance with standard operating procedures. In addition, I checked inventory and ordered chemicals and supplies, I verified instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and I ensured the implementation of the waste disposal policy of the company.
