In the summer of 2008, Zander and I led Overland’s most challenging backpacking trip, the Alaska Leadership Course. Over the course of the summer, I was constantly grateful for Zander’s skills as a leader, teacher, and team player, his insuppressible positive attitude, and his conscientious work ethic. With an innate sense of how to work with people and a true passion for doing his work at a high level, Zander is a natural leader. Zander and I built an honest and trusting co-leader relationship in which our opinions, input, and reflections were mutually valued. Though Zander was fully capable of leading our trip on his own, he held our teamwork in high regard, which ensured that we were in constant communication, always supportive of each other, constantly evaluating how we could improve, and comfortable giving and receiving advice from each other. I use the co-working relationship we shared as a model for building collegial relationships at my current teaching job. Additionally, Zander is organized, prepared, and responsible, and he fine-tuned these qualities in his leadership role at Overland. Simultaneously aware of the needs of all parties involved, be they students, parents, co-workers, or supervisors, Zander dealt with every situation that arose with confidence and maturity. I observed him superbly handle dangerous wilderness circumstances, complicated interpersonal interactions among students, messy logistics, and difficult encounters with parents.
