Hi there! I'm a saxophonist, composer, bandleader, educator, writer, and UCLA Global Jazz Studies 2022 graduate. My employment interests are broad, and I am excited to take on any opportunity that involves leadership, music, and helping people.As the president and co-founder of the Associated Students UCLA club Joe's Oasis, I had the privilege of combining these three elements. The vision of Joe's Oasis was to create weekly performance opportunities across campus for UCLA Global Jazz Studies students, providing them with a critical part of their education while also bringing entertainment to UCLA students and others on a regular basis. Joe's Oasis began in 2022 under the leadership of myself and professor Joe DiStefano and is now a thriving part of the campus community. This experience has taught me a lot about interpersonal communication, working with bureaucracy, and taking initiative to make big ideas happen (turns out creating a ASUCLA club from scratch is not easy!).On the performance side, I was fortunate enough to be a featured soloist in the "Four Questions" concert at Royce Hall, alongside Dr. Cornel West, Terence Blanchard, and Arturo O'Farrill. This was a transformative experience for me, as I saw and participated in the melding of music with calls for social and political change. I will never forget the feeling of losing myself in an improvised solo as Cornel West preaches into my face about jazz and social justice, and the lines between music and spoken word become blurred as his speaking and my playing come together. That day was a lesson in how music transcends borders and can be used more creatively and powerfully than many of us dare to dream of. I hope to pass my passion for music to others through teaching. I have taught at the Cuesta College Jazz camp, mentored my local youth jazz band for the past five years, and have taught saxophone to a number of private students. It is a joy to work with kids and see them grow through music.As a bandleader, my group Ursa Major has had the privilege of opening for the Branford Marsalis quartet at Royce Hall, as well as performing at other notable venues such as the Skirball Center and the Tower Research Center, playing a mix of my own compositions and standards from the jazz repertoire.
