Positivity Outward empowers youth to be successful and well through mentorship. The Positivity Outward Mentoring App connects high school and first-year college students with mentors that support students' growth and progress on their goals. We have 52 active mentors in 3 countries and 23 US states for our app-based program, and we host empowerment workshops in Uganda.

I designed a course for the Peaks and Potentials (for high potential middle school students) and NASA Explore (for rural middle school students from across Montana) summer camps. The class, titled Neuroscience and Self-care: Understand Yourself at a Cellular Level synthesizes my neuroscience education and personal development learnings to increase self-awareness and develop self-management skills. Each day is a 90 minute class with topics and activities as follows: Day 1: Understanding the Nervous System and the Body: the structure of neurons and their different roles in the body, overview of sensory perception. Day 2: Understanding the Central Nervous System: anatomy of the brain and how networks contribute to our sense of self and consciousness. Day 3: Understanding our Autonomic Nervous System: how the brain and body work together to create a fight or flight or stress response and the rest and digest or relaxation response. Day 4: Understanding Neuronal Differences through Personality: students take the Big 5 personality test (through openpsychometrics.org) and we discuss population distributions. Students learn that self-understanding and management is much more important than having a certain trait. Day 5: Plasticity and Learning through Reflection and Action: discussion of plasticity and how our brains change over time. How we can use structured self-reflection and action steps in the form of goal-setting to develop our brains in desired ways and have control over our learning/growth. Investigated vagal phenotype of Familial Dysautonomia, a neurodegenerative disease caused by a mutation in the ELP1 gene. Funded by NIH/INBRE grants, designed and conducted experiments to quantify neuron reductions in the nodose ganglion, visualize innervations of the heart, and quantify impact of ELP1 deletion in brainstem neuron populations.Publication with primary authorship forthcoming.
