With a $22 million budget, co-financed by the European Commission, and with more than 500 people involved, this project has become a milestone, enabling the exploration and preservation of 8 million hectares of marine surface, increasing Spanish seas protection from less than 1% to more than 8% in commitment with the International Convention of Biological Diversity and European legislation. Results & Achievements:• Part of a 3 person’s team coordinating more than 500 multidisciplinary persons involved in a $22 million project.• Increased Spanish seas protection from less than 1% to more than 8%. • Successfully coordinated all the research of the studied marine areas. More than 120 oceanographic campaigns were developed, studying more than 8 million hectares of marine surface, and successfully completing technical and logistical difficulties. • Established the first marine offshore conservation guidelines in Spain. • Carried out a participatory process for the first time in Europe: negotiations, meetings and workshops with the Spanish fisheries and other stakeholders.• Increased marine knowledge: more than 50 new species were discovered.• Successfully held 33 committees with all the partners involved.• Coordinated and developed more than 50 marketing and educational campaigns.• Managed and updated the content of the website with more than 800.000 visits• Built a huge networking community and assisted more than 100 international and national conferences.• Published 11 scientific books for the marine protected areas of the project. • Produced and edited a documentary about the project and marine conservation.
