While completing my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Houston, I took two Beginning Creative Writing courses as requirements for the Creative Writing Program. Later, I was not accepted into the program and ended my pursuit as a creative writing major, continuing as a literature major in order to graduate on time.However, I do not believe those classes were a waste of time or money. In fact, they have helped in a way which was not expected. I may not have learned how to write stories, but I definitely learned how to read them. I learned the elements of a good story not to write my own, but to recognize one when I read it. These classes, along with the internship at Gulf Coast have been great experiences to start from for someone who wants to pursue a career in reading and editing unpublished work. In terms of employment, I am pursuing a career as an editor of books, but I am to open to anything that involves reading content such as stories, reviews, articles, and more. I want to spend more time in an environment where I can learn about the editing process, and what steps I need to take in order to reach my goal of becoming an editor.Another aspiration I have, related to editing and publishing, is to work with pieces of writing originally in a different language that are being translated into English. Books I have read that were translated from another language into English were often grammatically incorrect with the overall syntax in need of improvement. I also felt that the meaning was partially translated or lost entirely, or that what was written could be misunderstood. I hope to aid in a way where I can edit the already translated piece and work with the translator to maintain the writing’s message and tone. Ultimately my goal is to have a career in which I am happy and willing to work, and which will be making a difference in the lives of those who, like me, love to read.
