I discovered the role of TMEM16A chloride channels in contractile pericytes in the brain cortex which regulate blood flow through capillaries. This important study identified this channel as a novel therapeutic target for the treatment of 'no-reflow' phenomenon which follows cerebral ischaemia. I also developed an imaging assay to study the role of this ion channel in coronary circulation.Collaborator: Prof David Attwell (UCL)

I investigated the role of mitochondrial ion channels in the development of cardiac arrhythmias through generation of reactive oxygen species. I utilized a range of electrophysiological and molecular approaches, including high-resolution optical action potential mapping techniques in Langendorff-perfused hearts.

Medical Research Council (MRC) - funded PhD project, jointly supervised by Prof Martyn M Smith at the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, and Prof Alison H Goodall at the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the BHF Cardiovascular Research Centre. The project aims were to investigate the roles of novel ion channels in platelet and vascular physiology, and in cardiovascular diseases including atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Employed as a student demonstrator in undergraduate level practicals and conducted final year tutorial classes for the 'Cellular Physiology of the Cardiovascular System' module. The module included teaching about/demonstrating human electrocardiography (ECG), blood pressure, the cardiac cycle, calcium cycling in human heart and electrophysiological calculations.
