I got to do so many different fascinating things over the seven terrific years I had at Meta.2016-2017:Hired for one of the first Social VR teams. We built a radically extensible open-source platform (TypeScript, WebXR, and Node.js). This project was, unfortunately, never released.2018:Wrote the bulk of the backend for the 3D Posts & 3D Photos products, including a system for ingesting and validating user-uploaded models (on the glTF format) at full fidelity for storage, then generating (on demand) optimised, client-specific variants for delivery. This included writing services for texture compression and (experimentally) mesh simplification and compression as well.2019:Became increasingly involved in the effort that'd later become the Khronos 3D Commerce subgroup; an attempt to standardise creation, management and calibrated rendering of 3D assets across across industries.2019-2022:Joined the Civic Integrity effort to combat online harms such as voter suppression and disenfranchisement, election deligitimisation, misinformation, hate speech and bullying. These years are difficult to summarise, partly because the work is sensitive, partly because the work involved was often as much data science, data engineering or ML engineering as it was software engineering.
