The Institute for Successful Longevity conducts research into how to live longer, stay active and be fully engaged in life. The institute takes a multidisciplinary approach to better explore the complexities of life as an older individual. Over the last century Americans witnessed tremendous gains in longevity, but successful longevity is more than living to a great, old age. It is about living well as we grow older. Living well means many things, so we draw on the talents of researchers in many fields across the Florida State University campus to look at health, cognition, recreation, mobility, financial security and other concerns.In the past, aging was seen as a problem, a condition or malady. Today at FSU’s Institute for Successful Longevity, we see aging as a natural stage of life, and our researchers look at all the components of an older person’s experience as we pursue the causes of age-related cognitive and physical decline and translate those discoveries into practices and interventions that slow or halt these changes. As Interim Director of ISL, I provide strategic direction and vision for ISL in alignment with the FSU's mission and goals. I oversee day-to-day operations of ISL, ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and adherence to established policies and procedures. I lead and support a multidisciplinary team of researchers, staff, and collaborators to achieve ISL's objectives and advance research initiatives in successful aging. I also cultivate partnerships and engage with external stakeholders including community organizations, government agencies, industry partners, and philanthropic foundations to promote awareness of ISL's research and initiatives.

The BIRD Program provides a central location to access support services related to human health data and research including: Clinical research design, Biomedical informatics database access (e.g., OneFlorida Data Trust), Quantitative and qualitative analysis, Access to support services for health data collection (e.g., REDCap). We link investigators with multidisciplinary faculty members and experts in various methodological techniques including biostatistics, epidemiology, biomedical informatics, artificial intelligence, qualitative research, and measurement and evaluation in health-related research. Investigators can consult with the BIRD team for research design, data acquisition and management, and data analysis needs that are applicable across the entire spectrum of clinical and translational research.

Health science is a major strategic priority of FSU. With major initiatives such as FSU Health and Health Data Science Institute (HDSI), FSU is in an unprecedented time of transforming into a health research powerhouse equipped by top-notch research infrastructure, well-versed researchers, and unique healthcare systems. As one of the major colleges in FSU that conduct health-related research, it is crucial for CCI to define our research strengths and priorities by identifying current research areas/projects and people who can lead or collaborate with other colleges on health-related research that facilitates such transformation. It is also equally important to identify barriers, challenges, and opportunities for growing these areas. Our current research strengths include health data science, health informatics, health communication, communication science and disorders, human-computer interaction, user-centered design, cybersecurity, digital youth, health librarianship, etc. Each of these areas could greatly benefit from the establishment of FSU Health and HDSI if we are proactively engaged in these initiatives from the get-go. As a subject matter expert of health research in CCI, my role is to (1) help define our health research profile and priorities, (2) organize resources, experts, and supporting personnel; (3) make sure that we will contribute to FSU Health Initiative, CTSA, and Health Data Science Initiative in a meaningful way.

AMIA Working Group serves as networks in which AMIA members can exchange information on a particular area of special interest in biomedical and health informatics. KDDM focuses on the process of extracting meaningful patterns from biomedical data (knowledge discovery), and using automated computational and statistical tools and techniques on large datasets (data mining). As such, KDDM Working Group has been a nexus of researchers and practitioners who develop and use AI and data science techniques in the biomedical and clinical domain to share their experiences, best practices, and perspectives to move the field forward.

I conducted research in the areas of biomedical natural language processing and text engineering using knowledgebases and large language models.

Working with Dr. Chunhua Weng in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. • Leveraging the state-of-the-art natural language processing, data mining, database, and data visualization techniques to derive hidden design biases in eligibility criteria of clinical trials in ClinicalTrials.gov, with the goal of facilitating precision design of new trials. (1) Designed and built a readily-computable database based on the metadata and parsed eligibility criteria for ~160,000 clinical trial records in ClinicalTrials.gov. (AMIA 2014) (2) Built a visual aggregate analysis tool for eligibility features of clinical trials. (JBI 2015) (3) Analyzed the population representativeness of Type 2 diabetes trials using the National Nutrition and Health Examination Survey data (MEDINFO 2015) (4) Developed a multivariate generalizability aggregate analysis model to assess the collective population representativeness of related clinical trials (To be submitted)• Built a model to analyze the drug retesting patterns in longitudinal clinical trial data to recommend new conditions for existing drugs.
