I am a PhD candidate in biostatistics, with a minor in behavioral sciences and health promotion. My research involves developing scalable Bayesian tools for spatial transcriptomics and contributing to longitudinal studies on healthcare access barriers for low-income Hispanic populations with diabetes along the Mexico-Texas border. My goal is to leverage statistics to bridge healthcare gaps and serve underrepresented communities.My path to biostatistics was not linear. It began with a love for the outdoors and an interest in ecology. After majoring in biology and completing a yearlong internship in plant ecology, I realized I needed stronger statistical skills to thoroughly analyze and make better use of the data my team and I had worked hard to collect. This realization led me to pursue a master’s in biostatistics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked in an outpatient lab studying infectious disease ecology, where I witnessed firsthand the humanity side of data. This experience deepened my commitment to medical research and data-driven solutions.As John Tukey said, “The best thing about being a statistician is that you get to play in everyone’s backyard.” I’m a lifelong learner, anchored in the present, guided by purpose, sparked by curiosity, and embracing the peaceful glow of happiness along the way.
