My task was to build Python modular tools to process results from a Passive Cavity Aerosol Spectrometer Probe (PCASP). The PCASP and many other instruments are operated on the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements (FAAM) research aircraft. These are used in investigating atmospheric conditions in order to improve current climate models for future weather predictions. My role involved transforming existing software that was originally written in C++ and also used to analyse calibration data into a reliable, user-friendly and fully documented suite of Python tools. The software tools were designed to take in measurement results from the PCASP, which was used to measure the concentration and sizes or particles with diameters ranging from 0.1 µm (10-6 m) to 100 µm. The goal of calibration was to minimise measurement uncertainties and to ensure that the relationship between measured signal voltage and particle size was fully characterised in order to make usable measurements. The results were passed through the four Python modules I built, each responsible for: 1. Obtaining voltage signal values of the detected scattered light from particles2. Modeling the particle size distribution from the received signal using a histogram3. Determining their scattering cross sections using Mie theory 4. Converting these into diameters.Working at the Met Office was a rewarding experience as it gave me an understanding of how airborne and ground-based atmospheric research is conducted and its cruciality in obtaining increasingly accurate and reliable forecasts. I also went aboard the FAAM research aircraft to see how atmospheric measurements were taken. I had the chance of carrying out laboratory work to calibrate the PCASP which allowed me to also apply my scientific knowledge in a practical environment. Show less

AMEC is an international company that provides clean energy solutions to clients worldwide. It is formed by different sectors in energy such as Nuclear, Water, Oil and Gas and draws its customers from both the public and private sectors. My work included using a computer code called CRITEX, developed by AMEC, to calculate and model the variation of power, temperature and reactivity with time in a fissile liquid during a criticality excursion. CRITEX is a computer code used to simulate transient criticality in fissile solution contained in a nuclear facility. It was developed to analyse and help in understanding the progression of criticality transients. The code uses input parameters based on information derived from real criticality experiments that have been performed in various facilities. The data gathered from these experiments also serves as a valuable source for the validation of CRITEX . I studied the models simulated by CRITEX to determine the dependence of the oscillatory behaviour on the bubble production and radiolytic gas. The aim was to find values that could be used in CRITEX to generate models that provided the best fit with the experimental data. To do this, I had to adjust the bubble velocities, the addition rate of the fissile liquid to the system and the volume of radiolytic gas produced per fission using the program. I succeeded in generating improved simulated results using values I obtained and was able to produce more accurate models for the experimental data. These contributed further to the study of the nuclear facility and I also had the opportunity to give a presentation of my work at a SEPnet Expo event to students, academics and employers attending the event.
