Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) involves spreading powdered alkaline rock over land surfaces, accelerating the chemical weathering of Ca- and Mg-silicate minerals to permanently store CO2. Although standard methods are used for determining mineral dissolution rates in the laboratory, there are considerable uncertainties when assessing rates in the field due to large variabilities of soil carbon and challenges in tracking carbon in its various forms (e.g., solid versus dissolved carbon). The goals of my research are to:1) develop a reliable methodology for measuring ERW CO2 removal rates in field soils2) assess the potential for using alkaline mine wastes as an ERW feedstock3) calibrate geochemical models for ERWThis research uses pulverized forsterite (Mg-silicate), and Mg-silicate-bearing kimberlite residues from the Gahcho Kué Diamond Mine (Canada).
