Corporate Intern: Large Power Systems Division

Mossville, Il

My internship was in the High Performance Diesel Fuel Systems area of the Large Power Systems Division at Caterpillar. I spent sixteen weeks working in the high-pressure fuel injector group doing both computer analysis and product testing.I spent eight weeks working with the Analysis and Simulation group on fuel system analysis and verification. I became familiar with Caterpillar's Dynasty software, analogous to Simulink. My responsibilities included analyzing bench-test data and using Dynasty to match the test data with the computer models. By changing parameters such as fuel pressure, rpm, and injection timing, the models could be altered to better reflect how the physical systems behaved in a test environment. During the last eight weeks of my internship I worked with the Debris Introduction and Robustness Testing Team (DIRT Team). My time there focused on robustness and endurance testing of the same high-pressure injectors and systems modeled in Dynasty. By introducing different ISO standard particle sizes into the fuel system and by varying operating parameters, the fuel system could be modeled to match real-world operating conditions on a much quicker time scale.
