"What I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career."--Bryan Mills (aka Liam Neeson) in the movie "Taken." Since I was 16, I've studied reporting, editing, page design, infographics, cartography, and GIS. It's wild that after my very long career I am now using every one of those skills for Woolpert AEG as a visual storyteller, more formally called a Technical Communications editor. Woolpert is a 113-year-old firm based in Dayton, Ohio, that does architectural, engineering, and geospatial projects around the world. I do whatever is needed to produce the highest-quality deliverables for our clients, whether editing and formatting reports or producing infographics and GIS-based maps. I work primarily in the Strategic Consulting division, but also do map infographics for Grant Services, Infrastructure, and other divisions.In the last year, I’ve developed visuals on a challenging range of topics for clients from small communities to federal agencies. I've developed graphics to explain topics such as coastal dredging, Lidar bathymetry, composite materials, school redistricting, vertiports, and even baggage handling in Pago Pago.In the last three years at Woolpert, I’ve won six first-place cartography awards. At this year’s Esri User Conference, I was honored to have four multi-map projects displayed in the Map Gallery.Before Woolpert, I spent 30 years as a very busy freelance graphic artist specializing in informational graphics: charts, maps, data visualizations, and process diagrams. I helped Fortune 100 companies, book publishers, and STEM firms develop infographics that told the story simply and quickly. My freelance clients included ExxonMobil, Kosmos Energy, National Audubon Society, Environmental Defense Fund, Intellectual Ventures, University of Oklahoma Press, Cambridge Press, and Cengage college textbook publishers.In 2017, for my certifications in GIS, I interned in BIM/GIS at the Smithsonian Institution’s Facilities Management group in Washington, D.C.—an experience I’ll never forget.My background is in newspaper journalism. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in reporting/editing from the University of Missouri School of Journalism and worked 12 years at the major dailies in the Dallas/Fort Worth area: the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News.
