My work at General Mills has spanned predictive analytics, forecast analysis, and creating models to differentiate product sales rates at different stores. My journey from PhD astrophysicist and educator to data scientist may seem indirect, but is actually a linear path taking me from joy to joy. Computational modeling of astrophysical data as a doctoral student enabled me to have fun exploring the universe. Being a physics teacher enabled me to share the beauty of the universe. As NCSU’s Physics for Engineering Coordinator, I managed large volumes of student data. My talents blossomed at the Institute for Advanced Analytics where I honed my Python, R, SQL, and SAS skills in Machine Learning, Forecasting, Data Mining, Statistics, and Cloud Computing. I morphed from earnest educator to dazzling data scientist. Something I make time for is eclipse chasing. Astrophysics mentors inspired my first trip, and I was hooked! Another hobby I am passionate about is mentoring girls and young women in their STEM journey. I feel my efforts in this area will help more women be able to contribute successfully to answering the problems of our modern world.
