About Zoe Friese
I am a summa cum laude graduate of Tulane University with a B.A. in Political Economy and Environmental Studies. In my education, I centered cultural exchange, language learning, environmental sustainability. I authored honors thesis research investigating connections between U.S. and Taiwan environmental activists resisting petrochemical development. My interest in this project stemmed from immersive experiences in China and Taiwan through the U.S. Department of State's Critical Language Scholarship. Through this funded program, I studied Mandarin Chinese at Dalian University of Technology in 2021 and National Cheng Kung University in 2022. I spent fall 2022 in Siem Reap, Cambodia attending the School for Field Studies, where I produced a publication about livelihoods of urban recycling collectors.Feel free to reach out!

Editorial And Publishing Fellow
CurrentAs a member of Communications and Knowledge Management, I develop editorial plans that support publication branding, resource mobilization, knowledge distribution, and earning initiatives.
Peer Advisor
I provide resources and guidance to Tulane students before and during their study abroad experiences. I also help manage weekly events like Global Café, host informational sessions, and will complete a capstone project improving the Office of Study Abroad's campus impact and outreach.
Co-Chair
Serve as the face of Tulane's newly established student advocacy body, alongside fellow co-Chair Akira Shelton. As co-Chairs, Akira and I collaborate in designing the assembly schedule, approving the biweekly legislation agenda, and preserving the body's mission of equity and accessibility.
Co-Chair Of Sustainability And Divestment
The Sustainability and Divestment Committee supports student changemakers to make Tulane a more environmentally conscious and socially responsible institution. As its first Co-Chair, I mentor delegates and students at large in completing campus sustainability projects, including festival composting, food waste reduction, bike-sharing, and public gardens. This role is a continuation of my work as the Director of USG's Sustainability Committee in Spring 2022.
Chief Editor Of Women Leading Change Journal
Through collaboration with the Assitant Editor and Newcomb Scholars Director, I oversee the publication of two volumes of the Newcomb Institute's journal Women Leading Change, in which members of the Institute's Scholars program contribute feminist case studies. I collaborate with authors one-on-one to ensure their writing's organization, grammar, and style best communicates their message, as well as coordinate the publication of the works online.
Green Wave Ambassador
Through this role, it has been my pleasure to welcome visitors and prospective students to Tulane's campus. I introduce our families and students to what campus life is like through walking tours, livestream events, students panels, Destination Tulane events, Honors Weekend, and other events throughout the year.
Resident Advisor
In coordination with my co-Resident Advisor, I am responsible for maintaining a welcoming, learning environment for a hall of 62 second-year students. Through floor meetings, intentional conversations, nighttime rounds, and warm greetings, I build a relationship based on trust with my residents, making myself available for whatever troubles they may encounter during this unprecedented year. With the Delta variant and Hurricane Ida already creating challenging situations, the role has required resilience, patience, and emotional intelligence to support my residents.
Student Worker
Using my experience with Mandarin Chinese, media platforms, and PowerPoint, I assembled asynchronous materials for beginners and intermediate Chinese language students to supplement current classroom instruction. I collaborated with current Mandarin professors in Chinese and English and analyzed what online resources best suited their student's needs.
National Security Language Initiative For Youth (Nsli-Y) Program Participant
All-inclusive scholarship for high school graduates to intensively study Mandarin Chinese abroad. As a recipient, I was placed with a local host family and attended a Chinese host school. The program kickstarted my understanding of Chinese language and culture and gain new familiarity with a completely different way of life. The program also allowed me to participate in the U.S.-China Rising Star Tour, in which American exchange students and Chongqing University of Science and Technology students discuss the future of e-commerce together.
