The Institute also plays an important role for advising governments and business on health policy through strategic collaborations with external organisations in the UK and abroad.

Lead for a unique, innovative programme utilising community pharmacists in SW London, to directly refer customers with suspected lung cancer/lung disease into secondary care at 2 large NHS trusts for clinical investigation. Following a successful pilot and second phase, now examining future roll-out of the project across London, including long term cost savings, efficiencies and health benefits. Additionally, responsible for the audit/analysis, management and design of key research projects and associated strategy/policy to deliver service improvement across SW London including Enhanced Recovery Programmes, Two Week Rule breaches and patient experience of breast prosthesis service.

Responsible for leading, developing and designing the then largest independent survey (1000 participants) into the use of IT by GPs. The project commissioned by the DH. Research involved both quantitative and qualitative research techniques and culminated in a report to the DH. Significant achievements: • Findings from the survey directly influenced development of policy related to the development government’s National Programme for Information Technology.• Publication of research findings in respected academic journal Informatics in Primary Care• Presentation of findings at a number of International conferences• Building on the initial research, development of primary health care computing research project with Monash University, Australia.

Responsible for identifying and critically appraising key clinical evidence to support the development on PRODIGY guidance as part of an internet based decision support system for GPs and primary care staff. This included work on evidence based medicine, disease management, patient safety, and health economics. Use of key medical databases including MEDLINE, and searching of medical journals and co-coordinating the horizon scanning process within the team.Significant Achievements:• Project manager and bid manager for two large scale projects with academic institutions and healthcare organizations in Finland funded by the European Commission.• Active contribution to publication two PRODIGY books.
