The freedom of all is essential to my freedom.I'm an activist, communicator and writer, deeply committed to equity and social justice. I started my career as a journalist for GroundUp News where I covered stories about land, housing, public transport, grassroots movements, SASSA grants, among others. In 2021, a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, I was compelled to get more involved in social movements and organisations that were working directly with communities. I moved to the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO) where I spent a year working with informal recyclers in Johannesburg in a project management and communications role. At that time, reclaimers and other informal workers' ability to make a living was being threatened by the Covid-19 restrictions which stopped workers from moving around the City. After studying in Cape Town for four years and working in Johannesburg for another four years, I felt an urge to go back to my home province of the Eastern Cape and pursue a life outside of the hustle and bustle. This is when I came across the Equality Collective (at the hand of algorithms or divine intervention) - a community-embedded social justice organisation based in the deep rural parts of the Eastern Cape. I joined the Equality Collective as Head of Communications for Social Change and shortly after, made the permanent move to Nqileni Village. I now work and live in community - something I have always dreamed of. I wake up with the chickens and breathtaking sunrises, and fall asleep to the sounds of the ocean an unpolluted starry nights. I have given up the luxuries of convenience and instant gratification for a much less glamourous life, and this was the genesis of my passion and commitment to an embedded model of social justice. When my community does not have reliable and consistent water, neither do I, and this has been a gamechanger in shaping my approach to advocacy, communication, justice, liberation and love.
