Development of R&D initiatives which interface academic research with industry and governments. Over the last 25 years, I have led multi-disciplinary research teams involving UK and EU Universities, the Oil and Gas industry, Environment Agencies and Developments for advancing our knowledge on extracting value from Big Data, understanding natural phenomena, data fusion, AI, machine learning, detection of behaviour and advanced situation awareness and decision support systems. My research network spans across Europe and internationally. I have a large experience in directing research programmes and developing new programmes in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.Currently, I am leading several large research projects as Principal Investigator with my research group (PRO_BU) and also supervise postgraduate students (PhD, MSc, including Erasmus students) as well as students placements in industry. My research projects concern the intelligent processing of Big data for extraction of knowledge and understanding critical situations, such as human and natural processes behaviour, natural hazards and industrial operations. I use all modes of sensor observations, computer vision and first principle phenomenology for understanding or the discovery of new emerging patterns or indeed of unknown processes. I have published more that 150 publications in scientific journals and conference proceedings. I sit in several computer science international conferences scientific committee and also co-chair the international symposium of environmental software systems. I also co-chair the OGC discrete global grid system specification and domain working groups internationally. I was also member of the board of directors at the European Big Data Value Association, but still as member and co-chair of the AI and Data Science TaskForce at the BDVA. At Bournemouth University, I lead the programme for the MSc Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and also the MSc Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence. PhD students and Post-doctoral fellows with research themes and proposals are welcome for discussions. Professor Of Data Science And Artificial IntelligenceBournemouth University Sep 2021 - PresentBournemouthAt Bournemouth University, I teach cyber situational awareness for final year Undergraduates and Artificial Intelligence for Master students in Data Science and AI as well as those in Digital Health and AI. I also lead my research group, called PRO_BU which stands for Processes and Behaviour Understanding (https://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/research/centres-institutes/computing-informatics-research-centre-circ/processes-behaviour-understanding-probu)Our research advances on using AI for understanding how to detect and diagnose severities of respiratory diseases, such as COPD, ASTHMA and Bronchitis, and COVID using fundamental features found in combined respiratory sensing observatory signals. We are also investigating on the Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia disease as among the rarest blood cancer types of white cells through gene expressions anomalies detection. We will also be starting in 2024 on investigating Infective endocarditis (IE) conditions. These have adverse effects on heart functions. Understanding anomalies in gene expressions as well as those features of phenotypic natures are all put under our research investigations. In addition to health, we maintain also our lead on using AI for understanding human induced cyber and physical behaviour in smart city spaces. More recently we completed a large multi-million pounds project (see https://www.s4allcities.eu/) with 27 European research and industrial partners, where we tested and validated our deployed AI digital twin technologies following research work done on crowd behaviour understanding combined with illicit cyber transactional event in smart spaces in three major Europen cities. Last but not least, our ongoing research using AI and Behaviour Understanding involves the intelligent detection of behaviour of natural species due to climate change. This has already been applied to marine species including seabirds, fish and sea turtles in the Atlantic + Mediterranean regions. -
Associate Professor Of Data ScienceBournemouth University Apr 2019 - Aug 2021BournemouthAs I joined Bournemouth University on April 2019, I was in a mission to upskill certain educational units where I revamped the Cyber Situational Awareness (CSA) for Level 6 (Final Year) undergraduate students by introducing new approaches based on observation data and the JDL framework for the advancement of CSA. I also joined the University Academic Standards and Education Committee for furthering our FUSION programme on research, education and practice. Currently our NSS has improved greatly, while our ranking under REF and TEF is really progressing well. In the meantime, I got funded for starting the Multi-Million pounds (£12.5M) S4Allcities large project for the development of digital twins in smart cities context. Furthermore, four research assistants and three postdoctoral research fellowships were funded. This led in the development of my research group in 2021. We have also established our academic research seminars which have been running successfully since 2020. Several eminent scholars from national and international Universities provided us with a breath of excellent seminars for our researcher in our faculty of Science and Technology as well as the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. the 2023-24 research seminar series will be launched in October 2023. -

Associate Director, Head Of R&DBmt Dec 1995 - Feb 2009Southampton, United KingdomSeveral advanced environmental information systems were developed for the Oil and Gas Industry, Government Agencies Nationally and Internationally. As Head of R&D, we researched on modelling the fate of industrial drilling muds and cuttings in the marine environment. This is of great importance for determining the risks and impact of industrial drilling discharges in the marine environment. Additionally we researched on the fate of production waters in the marine environment. These have been developed under the PROTEUS system which was holistically based on particle representation of drilling muds, cuttings and production waters. Other research activities included the simulation of acoustic noises and understanding their impact on marine species including sea mammals. This led us to develop the ISAAC system for the Oil and Gas industries and the DTI at the time. The time spent at BMT with my research team was great fun particularly for the amount of breakthroughs achieved in establishing new numerical models for the generation of advanced information systems for the industries. Another major research programme was achieved in the study of the short term and long term fate of seabed sedimentary systems such as cutting piles in the North Sea. I developed new approaches based on diagenetic principles for describing the fate (physical, chemical and biological) of seabed cutting piles in the marine environment. This was extremely important to assess their environmental impact during platform decommissioning programmes and achieve concrete decisions by the industries involved. The research work at BMT over the years was in collaboration with the Universities of Edinburgh, Cambridge, Plymouth, Aberdeen and Heriot-Watt. Also, the National Oceanography Centre, Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory (SAMS) were part in our research collaboration. -
Snr Research FellowOxford Brookes University Sep 1993 - Dec 1995Oxford, United Kingdom- Research on the first stable free surface flow model with the development of the NEWMOTICS2D code for the first time. The code which I postulated and wrote could simulate transient waves at solid walls before, at and after impact with great stability. This enabled investigations on the oscillatory nature of impact pressures at solid walls. Experimentation were successfully achieved on dam-break simulation and impact at solid walls. The code was also successfully tested at Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre using the CM200 machine. At later years the code was tested for convergence and investigation on pressure impulses using Cray XMP Machine at the University of Groningen in collaboration with Professor A. Veldman. -

The implementation of a finite element model for understanding the molecular fluid structures at high density was achieved. This work was in collaboration with Dr Jim Henderson. -
Research Fellow, Molecular PhysicsUniversity Of Strathclyde Sep 1990 - Sep 1991Glasgow, United KingdomInvestigated tri-atomic molecular systems and the Renner-Teller Effect. Deployed a finite element techniques for solving the Schrodinger equations. This work was in collaboration with Professor G. Duxubury, Head of School. The experience gained at Strathclyde was essential as it led me on continuing the work in molecular physics at the University of Leeds in later years. -
Research ScientistBergische Universität Wuppertal Jan 1987 - Oct 1987Wuppertal Area, GermanyResearched on implementing multi-dimensional fermion loops for the calculation of the Fermion Determinant in Lattice Chromodynamics (QCD). Intensive computing was required for such calculation at the time. This research in collaboration with Professor Karl Heinz Mutter, Head of School, was strategic to trigger my PhD studies when I returned back to the University of Glasgow.
