Clinical Scientist In Bioinformatics
As a Registered Clinical Scientist I performed routine bioinformatics analysis of patient genomic data, software design, development and validation for clinical use, and had training and line management responsibilities. I standardised and documented a large proportion of our internal processes, developing user guides and training materials that were put to the test when onboarding 5 new team members within 6 months. I helped establish a new sub-team trained to deliver frequent updates to clinically relevant software and for the streamlined testing and thorough documentation.I developed excellent written and verbal skills communicating with colleagues from diverse (technical) backgrounds. I contributed to the training of STP students from a range of specialisms and provided hands-on support during their time on rotation with our team.
Trainee Clinical Bioinformatician
Scientist Training Programme involved training on the job in the Genomics Laboratory while completing a Masters in Clinical Science (Bioinformatics) part-time. The role involved increasing responsibility in building bioinformatics pipelines and performing routine data analysis on targeted and whole exome sequencing data from patients for both rare diseases and cancers.Notable achievements include the implementation of a new pipeline for the detection of copy number variants for rare disease patients and the deployment of a targeted hotspot assay into the cancer pathway. The CNV project involved clinical requirements gathering, software design and development, clinical validation on retrospective and "live" data, as well as integration with the existing automation system for running diagnostic pipelines. In the cancer hotspot project my role was to coordinate the laboratory, scientific and informatics teams to ensure the safe and timely implementation of a new technology, which consisted if an on-instrument analysis and reporting software in addition to the physical sequencing machine.
Research Assistant
Worked at the Institute of Medical Biology, in Prof E. Birgit Lane's Epithelial Biology lab on a project about finding differentially regulated genes in a rare skin cancer condition. Initially genes were selected from bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput RNA sequencing data (in R), and findings were validated by quantifying mRNA and protein expression levels using quantitative PCR and Western blotting, from keratinocyte cell cultures.
