Postdoctoral Scientist
In the SFG SPP 1984 project titled 'Robust Control Design of Converter-Interfaced Resources in Hybrid Electricity Grids with Harmonic Stability Consideration,' I developed a real-time central controller that achieved sub-second response times. The controller's objectives were to optimize self-consumption, minimize grid losses (especially in conjunction with photovoltaics), and account for communication delays and constraints associated with resources like Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) operating in grid-forming or grid-following modes. We conducted extensive testing on a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) platform, which featured a real-time simulator by Opal-RT, a telecommunication network emulator, and a central controller that received grid states from a state estimator utilizing measurements from simulated Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs).
Doctoral Assistant
My Ph.D. research consists of two parts. The first part was supported by the EU H2020 OSMOSE project, studying the impact of grid-forming converter-interfaced battery energy storage systems on the dynamic behavior of power grids. This work includes experimental demonstrations based on an MW-scale lithium-Titanate BESS and a scale-up assessment on a lower-inertia 39-bus power grid. The second part was dedicated to protecting power grids undergoing big contingencies. In particular, I developed centralized and local under-frequency load-shedding schemes relying on Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) to cope with large contingencies in low-inertia power grids. The proposed protection control schemes are validated through real-time simulations executed by OPAL-RT eMEGASIM on the platform OP5600.
Research Assistant
My responsibility was conducting simulation tests to assess the performance of the designed excitor for a 2 MW emergency diesel generator. The objective was tunning the parameters of the excitor to improve the start-up response of the diesel generator.
Graduate Student Researcher
My primary responsibility was developing and validating a control strategy for large-scale renewable generation transmitted through a High Voltage DC (HVDC) transmission system. The proposed controller is first assessed using small-signal stability analysis and then validated by simulation tests on PSCAD. My project was based on a real scenario in Northwestern China where a mix of large-scale wind power generation and thermal power generation are sent to Eastern China via an LCC-HVDC system.
Research Internship
During the internship, I was responsible for control design and data analysis for a hybrid system of wind-solar generation with BESS. I proposed a control strategy to optimize the hybrid system's operation and conducted data analyses to investigate the degradation mechanism of the lithium-ion battery.
