Fungi play a crucial role in sustainability by decomposing organic matter, recycling nutrients, and enhancing soil fertility. They form symbiotic relationships with plants, aiding in nutrient uptake and improving plant growth. Fungi also contribute to bioremediation by breaking down pollutants and toxins in the environment. Additionally, they offer sustainable alternatives to synthetic materials through the production of biodegradable products, such as packaging and textiles. Their diverse applications in agriculture, industry, and environmental management highlight their importance in promoting ecological balance and sustainability. Using over my 20 years of expertise in fungal molecular biology we are finding solutions to sustainability problems in the fields of bioremediation, pollution control, food safety, novel and functional food production, nutraceutical discovery. Our interactions and collaborations are expanding to industry and leading institutions, which will generate great value for Ireland and Europe.
