I am appointed as a postdoctoral researcher in a large body of research “Burns Rehabilitation: A multidisciplinary program for burns management, treatment, and prevention in low-income countries”. This is funded by the National Institute of Research (NIHR) under “NIHR Research and Innovation for Global Health Transformation Call 4”. The overall project seeks to: • Co-adapt (with patients, caregivers, clinicians, and service users) a culturally appropriate burns care quality and rehabilitation programme for burn survivors;• Evaluate the acceptability, clinical effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of its implementation across Pakistan and determine its scalability and sustainability; • Improve burn prevention and risk assessment and reduce stigma; • Build capacity and capability in burn care, prevention, and research in Pakistan.As part of my role, I will be taking the lead in the planning and organisation of the project supported by the investigators at the University of Manchester (Dr. Maria Panagioti, Dr. Helen Brooks, and Dr. Amy Blakemore) in collaboration with the Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning (PILL). More specifically, I am co-leading a work package on developing a social media and health education campaign targeting burn-related stigma, prevention, and risk assessment in Pakistan based on Photovoice. This is a cohort study aiming to: 1) promote burn prevention and improve risk assessments; 2) improve knowledge, attitude, and practice of first aid following burns; 3) reduce burn-related stigma and raise awareness using social media platforms and community-led health education sessions; and 4) assess the effects of Photovoice on improving psychological well-being of participants. The effects of the Photovoice intervention on the psychological well-being of the participants will be tested through a quasi-experimental study nested within a cohort study.

I teach the Introduction to Psychology and Research Methods Courses and I supervise students at the Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences, Webster University Leiden Campus.

I work as a project coordinator in the Mental ESCAPE project which is an Erasmus+ funded partnership project including Waldritter, Learning Designers, RUSIHAK, EFQuBL, APICE and EFPSA. The project uses innovative educational processes and methodologies in participatory processes between youth and youth workers to reach out to youth and citizens who are at risk of mental health problems during and after the COVID-19 crisis. Mental ESCAPE will create escape rooms (2 pop-ups and at least one digital) on addiction and depression with the intention of generating awareness on these issues and contributing to the capacity building of youth workers on the use of experiential learning processes and gamification of youth empowerment.

As a visiting fellow, I work with the academic staff in research and public engagement projects. For instance, I recently took part in Queen Mary Conversation Club project aiming to enable conversations between academics across disciplines at Queen Mary University of London and artist/arts workers (creative artists such as performers, writers, film makers, musicians and also curators, producers, facilitators etc).

My PhD was on culturally adapting an existing CBT based e-health intervention for managing suicidal thoughts according to the Turkish migrants in the Netherlands and in the UK. I have also conducted a feasibility trial to investigate the indications for its effects in reducing suicidal thoughts.

The project concerns a partnership between Derman, a Non-Governmental Organization providing bi-lingual psychological and advocacy services to Turkish, Kurdish and Turkish Cypriot migrants, and the East London NHS Trust in London in the UK. My role includes developing and piloting psycho-educational awareness sessions aiming to improve suicide literacy and suicide related stigma in the Turkish-speaking communities in London. I am liaising with the relevant professionals and community groups in promoting and running these sessions. Additionally, I am investigating whether the sessions are acceptable and whether there is a preliminary evidence for an improvement in suicide literacy among the participants.
