Ms. Smith's work with the Office of Environmental Management (EM) included: • Natural Resource Damages (NRD's)• National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)• DOE Order 435.1• Low-level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facilities Federal Review Group (LFRG)• Examining disposal options at both the Hanford site and SRNL The Department of Energy is not a regulatory agency; however it does self-regulate its own radioactive waste. DOE is also affected by a variety of statutes, legislation, regulations, directives and guidance. Many of the current compliance-related actions revolve around waste and material disposition. These include National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Environmental Impact Statements and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) Records of Decision. DOE is currently revising its radioactive waste management regulation, DOE Order 435.1, and a link is provided for those activities, including the Complex-Wide Review Report, which is an analysis associated with implementation of the current requirements.EM is dedicated to safely disposing of waste and seeks cost effective and environmentally responsible project execution methods. EM's waste management mission involves planning and optimizing tank waste processing and nuclear materials, including spent nuclear fuel. EM offices that focus on waste management develop policy and guidance and provide technical advice on the tank waste system and nuclear materials. They also provide leadership to planning and executing EM programs for the storage, retrieval, pretreatment, treatment, and final preparation of these materials for disposal and tank closure planning. Environmental Modeling, Risk Assessment, Vapor Intrusion, PRG'sThe purpose of TIEM is to do basic research on significant environmental problems that impact the State of Tennessee and have national and international implications. The focus of the Institute is on experimental design and environmental model formulation, together with mathematical and statistical analyses of model results and projections for use by decision makers. TIEM researchers develop theoretical and computational tools for studying the environment as well as hardware and software (such as parallel computing and visualization graphics) to implement and analyze the models. TIEM is housed in the Division of Biology and is directed by Louis J. Gross.Detailed objectives of this program are:Research. (1) To support interdisciplinary research in mathematics, computational science, and ecology; (2) To provide research training and supervision for graduate students based in several departments and programs at UTK; and (3) To foster scientific interactions and collaborations between quantitative faculty and students and empirical researchers.Education. (4) To provide excellent graduate educational training to enable our students to compete for both industrial and academic positions; (5) To introduce advanced undergraduates to mathematical modeling methods in the biological sciences; and (6) To aid the development of quantitative skills for life science students at all levels.Service. Ms. Smith assisted Dr. Gwinn with experimental procedures and data collections related to research on chemical compounds in plants and their inherent properties. Methods used to separate compounds including thin layer chromatography and glass plate chromatography where used.Dr. Gwinn's research focus is on commercially viable plant, insect, and microbial compounds or mixtures of compounds that can be used to control diseases and pests.
